Oni Egg Hunt is a location based sightseeing game with the goal of exploring Ibaraki City (茨木市), Osaka Prefecture.

The game was built alongside students from Ritsumeikan University, also located in Ibaraki City, and we created this game in hope of allowing future study abroad students to discover all of Ibaraki’s unique landmarks.

In Oni Egg Hunt, players are tasked with travelling across Ibaraki to places of interest, whether they’re Shinto shrines, beautiful urban gardens, or unique architectural features.

The game uses GNSS technology to get a player’s exact location: this means that players have to be at exact coordinates in order to gain points. Once a player reaches a location, all they have to do is take a selfie!

My role on the team was to create icons for the game to use. In the spirit of Japan’s love for mascots, I decided to create my own: the Usa-Oni, a combination between an Easter Bunny and an oni (which the city of Ibaraki already uses as a mascot). The pink-blue-yellow color palette was chosen in order to create a “cute” feeling for the game.

Oni Egg Hunt was created in Unity for Android. All illustrations were drawn in Krita.
